The Proper Footy Podcast

Wednesday, 20 January 2021 - 28 minutes

We're back with the #ProperFooty Podcast and Dr Anthony Gill joins us this week. Tony chats about the huge benefits that football, sports and general exercise can help improve your mental health.

Following a competition at Christmas, Settle United AFC who are all about #ProperFooty, raised £1,500 for MIND the mental health support charity.

A really insightful podcast that helps to overcome the stigma with mental health. Remember, if you ever need to talk, never be afraid to open up. It is okay to not be okay and opening up about a problem with your mental health is the first step to finding ways to manage it or overcome it.

15.9million people seek help from MIND alone each year, it is what they are there for.

SUAFC's head of marketing, James Hamer, who leads with this podcast said: “Mental health is such an important topic and even more so for young men, who are the biggest group of people to commit suicide. We’re over the moon to have raised so much money for MIND and to have helped get rid of some of the stigma of talking about not being okay at the same time.

“The support we had from the business community in the area to help us compile the prizes has been incredible. We are lucky that businesses support the club throughout the year and it’s great that we’ve been able to convert some of that support into much-needed funds for charity too.

“We have lots of exciting plans to grow a successful football club in our community and it’s a great time to be a part of a club that has over 50 men signed on to play with us.”

Settle United strives to be a positive part of the community and has also donated club merchandise to Settle Swimming Pool to help them continue to fund this vital community facility in the town.

Proper Footy is brought to you in association with Settle United a ‘proper Yorkshire Dales footy club’ since 1884. That 90 minutes where nothing else matters.

Forget your multi-million pound players, your 6-figure salaries, your perfect pitches and your glamorous hospitality. Start with one green shed (ground being developed as part of series), plenty of pork pies and some half-decent football with loads of funny real moments and an insight into amateur footballers lives. This club is on a journey up the football pyramid from the bottom. Grassroots most favourite club, let’s see where it takes us together.

Without further a do, here's this weeks very special official (with unofficial bits) #SUAFC podcast brought to you from our Proper Footy podcast on all good channels.

Settle United Association Football Club was founded in 1884 and our team played their first football games at the ground we play at today, Bridge End. The ground is seen by many as one of the most awe-inspiring and beautiful there are in the United Kingdom; the River Ribble curves it’s way around the pitch and we have a picturesque backdrop to the pitch with the Settle to Carlisle railway line overlooking us, as well as the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Dales (Settle Loop walk) too.

Bringing you real, honest and entertaining stories from Yorkshire's Proper Footy Club. #SUAFC are an ambitious football club. We aim to provide a safe, well-organised club for local football players to enjoy playing and representing our Yorkshire Dales market town. We believe in ensuring our teams have the backing of a passionate management team to allow them to be successful on the pitch.
