A Skipton heroes welcome for Yorkshire Gunners

Soldiers from the Yorkshire Gunners are set to be given a hero’s welcome when they march through the streets of Skipton today (2 March) during a special parade.

The 5th Regiment Royal Artillery “The Yorkshire Gunners” have been awarded the Freedom of Craven and have planned an exciting day of family-friendly activities in Skipton to commemorate this historic moment.

And members of the public are being encouraged to line the route of the parade, which happens today (Thursday 2nd March), to give the brave soldiers the very warm welcome they truly deserve. Craven schools are also encouraged to participate in this momentous and fun-filled occasion by encouraging pupils to line the route, cheer on the marching troops and take part in a varied range of fun-filled activities in the afternoon.

Craven District Council’s member champion for Armed Forces, Cllr David Ireton, will be among the first people who greets the soldiers when they arrive.

He said: “The Freedom Parades are such spectacular events. It is a fantastic opportunity and honour for us all to show our support and appreciation to the young men and women who do a very dangerous, but vital job and put their lives at risk in service of their country.

“I would like to encourage as many Craven residents as possible to attend on the day to cheer on the brave soldiers. It is extremely important that our armed services know that they have support of all sections of the community.”

The High Street will be closed from 11am until 3.30pm from the top of the High Street to Otley Street for the event.
