Broughton Bridge to undergo major restoration scheme

A major repair scheme on Broughton Bridge is to commence to protect the historic listed structure and its vital link to Broughton Hall.

North Yorkshire County Council bridges team will begin the work on Monday, March 29, which is expected to last 32 weeks.

“The bridge, off the A59, and its retaining walls require urgent repairs to ensure it is fit for future traffic demands,” said Councillor Patrick Mulligan, of the Airedale division.

“The essential work will include the dismantling and rebuilding of the retaining walls, buttresses and parapets using the existing stone. The steel braces inserted into the bridge will be removed and reinforced.”

During this time the road will be closed to all vehicles and pedestrians. Advance warning signs will be in place and there will be a signed diversion during the road closure period.

Cllr Mulligan added: “We appreciate that the lengthy closure will be an inconvenience to many but please be assured this essential work will have long-term benefits. If there are any changes to the schedule we will update the public.”

Operatives working on site will be observing all Government guidelines on safe social distancing.
