As the summer draws to a close, visitors to the town have until Sunday September 7th to follow the flowerpot festival trails around Settle
At the end of the festival the exhibits are taken down and returned to the Potting Shed at Watershed Mill for a Finale Fun Day on Sunday September 14th.
Admission is free for the Fun Day which runs from 10am to 4pm and features stalls organised by local community groups and performances by Settle Brass Band. Many of the Flowerpots will be on display which provides a last chance to take photographs of favourite characters together in one place before the creations are dismantled or stored for a reprise next year.
A new addition to this year’s Festival has come courtesy of a new volunteer. Jan Jack and her husband Alastair moved to Settle recently and pitched in straight away. A retired comedian, speaker and poet, she has penned verses to accompany various of the exhibits around the town.
The Festival is currently featured in Settle’s Gallery on the Green which claims to be the smallest art gallery in the world - a traditional red phone box. The gallery has curated an exhibition of photographs depicting the ‘behind the scenes’ work that goes into creating the 200+ flowerpot exhibits each year.
Mike Smith, from the Gallery on the Green explains, “We have a visitor book in the gallery and it’s clear from the enthusiastic comments left by visitors that the Festival is attracting people from all over the UK and abroad. Many say that they come back year after year.
One visitor from Brighton wrote ‘We have been amazed, amused and delighted at the ingenuity, creativity and sheer number of wonderful flowerpot creations’. Or as Clive from Clapham said succinctly, ‘Delightfully barmy’.
