Petition launched to save pool as public asked for views

The public is being asked for its views on the future of a North Yorkshire swimming pool as users launch a petition calling for the venue to remain open.

The survey will give users of Richmond Swimming Pool the chance to give their opinions after North Yorkshire Council said it was considering a range of options for the site.

The council revealed last week that the pool, which closed after a part of the ceiling fell down in April, will need major repairs before reopening.

The options include undertaking essential work only, carrying out essential work plus other improvements to the customer areas, reconfiguring the site and facilities offered, looking at alternative uses for the site or closing the pool for good.

North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for leisure, Councillor Simon Myers, said: “We want to make sure that we gather as many views as possible from the public to help make an informed decision on the future of the Richmond site. The closure of the swimming pools is disappointing news for customers, the local community and for us as well, and we apologise for the ongoing disruption and thank them for their patience. All options are being considered and no decision has been taken, so I would urge anyone who would like to express their views to take part in the survey.”

As well as the ceiling repairs, the building’s air handling units require replacement, with other areas in urgent need of improvement and key equipment needing to be replaced, officials say.

The council said that any decision on the future of the site would be taken in the context of a “countywide leisure investment strategy” that was already underway.

Further assessments on the building have started and initial findings, along with the results of the survey, are expected to be considered by elected members in the autumn.

Meanwhile, a petition calling for the pool to remain open had attracted more than 200 signatures in less than 24 hours.
It was launched by parent Rachael Simpson at the weekend.

She said: “Richmond Swimming Pool is not just about swimming; it’s about fostering community. It supports local jobs, brings people together, and helps reduce social isolation. With every swim session and lesson, bonds are strengthened, and friendships are forged in our community. We understand the financial constraints; however, cutting off such an essential facility is not the right solution. We urge the local council to explore funding sources.”

A café at the site in Richmond is continuing to operate as normal. The neighbouring gym, where two businesses are based, is also unaffected by the current closure.

Anyone wishing to take part in the survey can find more details at www.northyorks.gov.uk/RichmondLeisure

Paper copies of the survey will be available at the Active North Yorkshire Richmond centre that remains open where people can also return the completed forms.
