On Saturday 6th September musicians from all over the north will join forces with the famous Muker Silver Band to play a concert in memory of Norman Guy who died last year.
Norman played cornet from the age of 13 joining the band in 1952 and helped keep banding alive in Muker and the Dales for over 70 years. He went on to be Bandmaster from 1971 and conducted his last concert just a month before he passed away.
There will be a total of 50 players made up of other bands from the Dales and beyond joining the regular Muker Band.
They include Members from The Reeth Band, The Leyburn Band, Ripon City Band, Chapeltown Silver Prize Band, Cockerton Band, The Hawes Prize Band, Callander Brass, Aycliffe and Brancepeth Band and Holymoorside. They’ll play a programme of Norman’s compositions, arrangements and favourite pieces in the beautiful natural amphitheatre of the Upper Swaledale hills where Norman was born, lived and worked.
The concert will be in a large marquee on the Muker Show field just a few days after the annual village Show.
Norman played in the band with his brothers, cousins and later, son, daughter-in-law, grandchildren and other family members. His baton has now been handed on to his son Allan who will conduct this special concert and share stories of his much-loved father.
It starts at 2pm and is free, with donations welcome to jointly support the Stroke Association and the ME Association, charities which Norman cared about deeply.
