A four-bedroom house in the heart of Aysgarth has sold at auction for a staggering two-hundred and sixty-three thousand pounds.
Now, that might sound like a bargain for the Dales—where similar homes fetch north of half a million—but this property comes with a very specific "help wanted" sign. Under a Section 106 agreement, the owners are legally required to work at the George and Dragon pub next door.
There is, however, a slight hitch: the pub actually closed its doors back in 2025.
Despite the prospect of pulling pints in an empty bar, the auction saw a bidding war with one-hundred and twenty-three separate offers. Experts from Marcus Alderson estate agents say the buyers likely sought legal advice before diving in, perhaps betting that the pub’s closure might eventually clear the way for that restrictive red tape to be cut.
For now, though, the new owners have a beautiful home... and a very quiet shift ahead of them.
